This course provides a general overview of the Johannine corpus, as well as a more in-depth exegesis of the Fourth Gospel. Johannine Christology, soteriology, ecclesiology, pneumatology, ethics, and spirituality will be discussed within the context of the Johannine community’s trajectory from Judaism into the Catholic Church. The contribution of Johannine theology towards the shaping of the Christian Creed will be addressed as emerging from the conflict both with the Synagogue and with Gnostic tendencies among believers. The relevance of Johannine spirituality for contemporary faith will also be explored with due attention to social location.
