This course provides an introduction to the concept of traditional/indigenous spirituality and religion in Africa, the connection between religion/spirituality/theology and art, the rituals associated with various religious traditions and a survey of traditional/indigenous African religions by region with a look to how these religious expressions exist in the diaspora. A particular investigation of the connections of African indigenous spirituality and the evolution and development of religious expressions in the Americas.
Our study will begin with developing an understanding of the origin of life with all of connections to life and culture on the African continent, the development of an African cosmology rooted in the development of civilizations and cultures African context. We will explore ways of speaking about and “defining” religion, life, spirituality, etc. within the Africana context.
