Course Description

This course is an introduction to the thought, writings, and legacy of Thomas Merton, one of the greatest and influential twentieth-century Catholic mystics, social critics, and spiritual writers. This course covers the full range of his life from 1915–1968, providing an overview of the major areas of his thought and writing, including (a) spirituality and contemplation; (b) social justice, nonviolence, and anti-racism; and (b) interfaith and ecumenical dialogue and friendship.
